Late Night Blues
I worked about 19 days straight as of this past Saturday. I took Sunday off. Sometimes, I find working late quite peaceful. My desk is in the far corner with 4 other desks and so secluded away from the busy-ness of the rest of the area. However, it gets rather boring at night. Especially since the other 4 people that normally sit around me aren’t staying as late. There are a lot of others staying late too, but they’re all on the other side of my cube. Sometimes it makes me jealous when I hear them guffawing about stuff I don’t know about. Oh well.

Work Perks & Beauty vs. The Geek
A few weeks ago, because of a bunch of Photoshop work I’d done for the team, I was offered some tickets to watch a Vancouver Giants game but already had plans for that night. Yesterday, I was given a pair of Canucks tickets! I haven’t been to a Canucks game for years now. And I think they’re pretty freaking sweet seats too!
I watched my first episode of Beauty and the Geek. I think it’s the second episode of the season, but it has peaked my interest. My producer and some others love these types of shows, and I can see why. It’s completely ridiculous and unecessary drama! And damn, we get to make fun of these people.
The girl who got kicked out tonight, Amber I think her name was, I thought should’ve stayed ’cause although she’s a bitch, she admits that she’s a bitch. The girl I wanted off the show was Cara, ’cause her voice was sooooo annoying. It’s like a 5 year old speaking. Which reminds me of a girl I know who gets child-like around her boyfriend… Then there was this one geek, who had a totally built upper torso. It was insane how much he must’ve worked out. Overcompensating for something I suppose. Perhaps I will tune in for subsequent episodes…

The MVP Reunion
Last night was a large gathering at Steamworks for anyone who had worked on any of the MVP Baseball games years back. It was surprising to see that so many people had showed up. I hadn’t kept in contact with many of the folks who had left the studio, but I was able to chit chat with a number of them fairly easily (I’m horrible at social events). It was just a good time to see everyone together again.
MVP was always a great team. Although I didn’t think I always quite fit in, it still felt like a family. It was a small enough team to be able to splurge on monthly birthday celebrations with beer and cake. Also small enough to sometimes get the company American express to pay for a dinner or two. :P Every monthly meeting had raffle prizes. The wrap-up parties were always a blast. People partied like friends rather than co-workers. There were limbo contests, poker games, curling and karaoke. It was good times. I don’t think that sort of thing will ever exist again on another game team at the studio. But I think we all try to pass it along wherever we work now.
One of the girls there was pointing out how the majority of them who started in the industry when they did are in such good positions now. They are the senior people in Vancouver’s gaming industry now. I feel quite lucky to be sort of a part of that group.

Rock Band
Our franchise manager got a copy of Rock Band and it’s set up in the centre of our area. Productivity has shot down, but rocking out has shot up. I’ve yet to try it out though.

Office Pranks
One of my co-workers, Nick, has the same last name as me, which isn’t the most common last name. So we joke around that we’re brother and sister or twins sometimes. I think last week, he started telling our new manager that we were siblings, and told me to play along.
Today, our manager started asking me if we really were related. So I said yeah and added stuff like how Nick went off to the east to study while I stayed in Vancouver (to sort of explain our personality differences). I was sorta saying that we were twins but just born 2 weeks apart (our birthdays actually are about that time apart), but I think he didn’t pick up on that part. Phew, it’d be a bit more complicated. While we were chatting, another co-worker sitting nearby expressed his surprisement that we were related. But soon changed his mind and wasn’t convinced that we were related. Which confused our manager even more, ’cause his reasoning was, “You guys have been working here for so long, how can these guys not know you’re related?”
So I wandered off for meetings and to do some work, but Nick and our manager was passing by my cube and brought it up again. I confirmed again that we were related, but our manager was still reluctant to believe. Then asked another guy passing by if it was true, which he confirmed. But he’s still in doubt. I think my next step to take is to photoshop up a baby photo of us, if Nick’s got any lying around, hahaha. If I can pull that off, I think this could top the “I got married and had a kid” prank on an ex-coworker. ![]()
