Portal - Weighted Companion Cube BFF Cross Stitch

For my second video game-themed cross stitch, I decided to go with a more recent popular game - Portal. I used 14-count Aida fabric which fits nicely into a 4×6 inch frame. This time, I decided to try out some self-stick mounting boards which were found in the cross stitch section of the craft store I went to. It worked out pretty well, I was able to peel the fabric off fairly easily to readjust. The frame required minor modifications so that I could fit the mounted stitch in along with the glass still.

Can’t tell you how much I love these!

You don’t sell them on Etsy or some such, do you?

Alice. x

Alice - Glad you like it! No, I don’t have anything on Etsy yet. I just found out about it so I’ll have to do a little reading up first.

This is the second Portal related cross stitch I’ve seen tonight, which leads me to curse (and I do this with a heavy heart and only partially) that I do not have a Windows machine on which to run said game. Clearly, if I game is good enough to generate two wonderful cross stitch projects it must be amazing.

I love what you’ve done here.

The second Portal-related stitch?? Got a link to the first? I’d like to see. :)
and thanks! Glad you like it.

Oh and if you have a 360 or PS3, Portal is out with the Orange Box for those.

Heh, I made some portal cross stitch, too - our WCCs are very similar! Great minds think alike, huh? I did one of the cake, too.

Ahh yes, I stumbled upon your patterns a few days ago, definitely very similar! Cake looks good, might have to try making that one some time. :D Hope to see the finished stitches some time. Your Link one is aweomse too! So cute. (I have no idea where your comments section is lol)

Thanks so much for this pattern, I have made it for my boyfriend for Valentines Day, he has already seen it and loves it (I couldn’t resist giving it to him early, as I was too excited!). It was my second cross stitch project, and your grid made it very easy to do, thanks so much :)

If I get around to putting a picture up, I’ll put a link here, but it’s pretty much the same as yours, but with my own bad stitching, creasedness and cheap purple ikea frame ;)

Sarah - Glad the pattern worked out and your boyfriend liked it. :) It’d definitely be cool to see how it turned out! Did you iron the material after you were done stitching? I usually do that (I place a thin cloth over the cross stitch then iron over top that) before mounting it.

Ooo, no I didn’t, I am a cross stitch noob clearly ;) I shall have to take it out of frame and do that. I could do with some sticky stuff to mount it on too, I had nothing. I shall have to get supplies at the weekend ;)

Originally I was going to use an adhesive spray to mount my stitches onto a board of sorts, but then the people at the crafts store told me to use the self-adhesive boards that are made specifically for embroidery work. So far they’ve worked out quite well. Takes a few trials to get the thing mounted on properly so it fits centred in the frame.

With these boards, you have to peel off the backing to get to the sticky side. But to avoid sticking the fabric on then peeling it off to reposition, I’ve been leaving the backing on for the start, then just taping the fabric on, fit it into the frame and do my repositioning that way. When I have it in a good spot, I then put some pins around the edges of the fabric so I know where to re-line up the board when I actually stick it on.

Hope that helps!

Great pattern! I adored it so much, I made one for myself. I even found some aida with little pink hearts printed on it- so cute I almost died.

I meant to comment a while ago, but I made one of these for my BFF who loves Portal.

I haven’t the heart to tell him about the cake, yet…. he’s just so excited.
